“Witch Board, Better Known as Ouija”

Ouija boards were so popular for a time, especially when my Mom was a kid in the 50’s. My Grandmother had a Ouija board in her house, so when my Mom’s friend Sharon came over and she, Sharon and my Grandmother, sat down at the table, it was no big deal to ask questions.

Much wasn’t picked up, but this night, right before My mom’s friend Sharon left, she thought, let’s try something! So Sharon whispered a question into my Mom’s ear and after she left, my mother and Grandmother were to ask the Ouija that question, as a kind of experiment. Then Sharon would call them later that night to find out if the board knew the correct answer.

So Sharon made her way home. My mom and Grandmother asked the Ouija “What is Sharon’s Grandfather’s last name?” It spelled it out letter by letter giving them an actual name, it lead them, by no force of their own, it moved. They were astonished! My Grandmother wrote the name down.

Two minutes later their was a phone call from Sharon. “Hi this is Sharon, did you figure out his name? I bet you couldn’t! That stupid thing is so fake!”.

“It kinda looked like it moved by itself, but it was probably some kinda trick.” my Mom replied as she looked at My Grandmother’s handwriting on the piece of paper she was holding. My mom said “So what is your Grandfather’s last name anyways?”, “Stewart” Sharon replied. My mom looked at the piece of paper in her hand and dropped the phone.

It said in my Grandmother’s writing, “Stewart.”

“Hello?” My mom heard Sharon wondering what had happened. She grabbed the phone, “Sharon I’ve gotta go now!” and hung up. After telling My Grandmother everything, she decided she’d had enough and took the board outside and put it in the trash. She claims to never want anything to do with them ever again, even to this day!

  1. Great story. It’s a good thing she threw it away. If she would’ve kept it, it would’ve started swearing at her and giving her negative answers like mine did. I share my experience with one on my blog too. Love coming and reading your stories! ❤

  2. Thank you so much! My Mom was so young and impressionable, but then again, My Grandmother used it. Goes to show young and old can make this mistake. I’m so glad you stopped by to read and comment. I will absolutely love to read your writing as well and comment. 😊

  3. Early press releases stated that Vincent Furnier’s stage and band name ” Alice Cooper ” was agreed upon after a session with a Ouija board, during which it was revealed that Furnier was the reincarnation of a h-century witch with that name. Alice Cooper later revealed that he just thought of the first name that came to his head while discussing a new band name with his band.
